(What am I supposed to put here? A 1-2 page overview of the toolkit contents and why this toolkit is/has been/will be valuable to 1) you and 2) other pre- and in-service teachers of ELLs). Blah blah blah

My ESL toolkit includes summaries of 6 instructional approaches that are effective for teaching ELL's and links to information on the web for teaching activities in the areas of Autobiography, Music and Jazz Chants, Games, Video, Media, Literature, Storytelling, Technology-based, Drama, Visual Arts, TPR, Social justice-based. Not included in the Toolkit but on my wikispace are 5 lesson plans.

The lesson plans are presented in the SIOP format and address the areas of language arts, math, social studies, science and art. Although each lesson is planned for a specific grade level, they are open-ended enough to be adapted to different levels. Two favorite lessons are included if you are interested in taking a look. Lesson Plan #2 focuses on recognizing the features of different kinds of triangles. Lesson #4 integrates art and social studies. Through observation of works of early twentieth century Latino and African American artists, students explore the artists' use of the elements of art to convey meaning about the social issues of the time. Then students create a project to express their ideas about current societal issues.

As an administrator, knowledge of best practice instructional approaches is important when working with teachers to improve classroom practices. Knowing what and how instruction should be happening in the classroom facilities discussions regarding textbook recommendations, district-wide and school goal setting and the professional growth and development of teachers and administrators. As an evaluator I encouraged the teachers I worked with to work continuously to expand their repertoire of effective instructional strategies. Understanding the approaches in the toolkit and implementing them in lessons will give teachers some foundational practices to support learning for ELL's.

Throughout the ESL approval program I have used the web to search for information and ideas for assignments and to gain better understanding of some of concepts we have been introduced to in class. I hope the some of the website links will be useful to other teachers working with ELL's and I hope to use the information to work with our ELL administrators and staff to improve our instructional programs.
